Betting on sport is substantial company.
Sport England estimates the worth of costs on sport-related betting in England grew from ₤ 1.7 bn in 1985 to ₤ 2.8 bn in 2008.
And that figure is likely to have grown further, with an estimated ₤ 1bn bet on the World Cup alone in the UK this summertime.
Meanwhile, German research study company Sport & Markt estimates the total global betting market will deserve 263bn euros (₤ 220bn) by 2012, with much of that driven by internet and sports gaming.
But when the integrity of occasions are hit the gambling market suffers, and profits are put under risk if consumers can not wager with confidence.
And there can have been couple of higher-profile sport betting stories than those impacting cricket and snooker this year.
High-profile
As Sport & Markt's Gareth Moore observes: "Everyone speak about the sports betting market now.
"Not only is it a considerable market in world organization, it is one that is now on the front pages of newspapers."
Four Pakistan cricketers have been questioned by cops over spot-fixing accusations associating with a test against England at Lord's last month.

Three of these players have stated they will likewise challenge the corruption charges mounted versus the trio by the sport governing body the International Cricket Council.
Meanwhile, three-times snooker world champion John Higgins was cleared of match-fixing accusations, but was banned last week for six months for failing to report the unlawful technique to him to throw frames.
There are also 2 other continuing investigations - not associated to Mr Higgins - into snooker.
'Honest'
David O'Reilly is legal counsel for Betfair, one of the UK's most significant online sporting exchanges.
"If the sport is viewed as truthful, straight and reasonable that is good for betting firms because individuals will invest money wagering with confidence," he states.
"If you take the Pakistan claims, although unrelated to the UK controlled wagering market ... it is not really a favorable story for betting in the UK.
"That is since the understanding is that 'cricket is now something we may need to beware about'."
'Education'
So what can be done to prevent future scandals?
According to specialists at a World Sports Law Report conference into sports betting, the focus has to be on sportspersons and sportswomen.
As Simon Taylor of the Professional Players' Federation points out: "The only people who can repair a match are the rivals or the referee."
His organisation represents men and ladies in 15 sports betting in the UK, being an umbrella organisation for all player organisations, such as the Professional Footballers' Association.
He thinks that it is not adequate to merely have deterrents, sanctions and disciplinary treatments, however that the way to take on prospective issues around players is also through education.
Mr Taylor says rules need to be described plainly to players with clear examples, and by individuals they appreciate.
"Through educating players about sports betting you reinforce integrity and that is in everyone's interest," he includes.
"If gamers are harder to corrupt then sport will be harder to corrupt."
'Brand damage'
Matt Johnson, head of regulative legal recommendations at the Football Association, agrees.
"Prevention is much better than treatment, and we also make a point of informing players 'you are going to be captured'."
"It is necessary that sport is directly, and is seen to be directly," he adds.
"If it loses that then individuals don't want to bet, that is not in gaming companies' interests, and it is not in our interests."
He said that once a great credibility was lost, the damage to a sport was "enormous".
FA rules imply gamers are not allowed to bank on a competition in which they are included.
Mr Johnson states players have to be seen not to be cashing in on any inside knowledge, which he states could trigger "brand damage" to football and its competitors.
So, even a Second Division gamer knocked out of the FA Cup in the fall can not bet on a Manchester United v Chelsea cup last the following spring.
"We have to overcome to gamers the reputational threat to the video game," he states. "Once self-confidence has been damaged it is difficult to get it back - mud sticks."
'Overwhelmingly legal'
If this represents the "carrot" technique, then maybe Nick Tofiluk, director of guideline at the Gambling Commission, represents the "stick".
The Gambling Commission was established under the Gambling Act 2005 to regulate business betting in Great Britain.
An ex-chief constable of West Midlands cops, Mr Tofiluk has responsibility for policing all betting in the UK apart from spread wagering, which is the remit of the FSA.
"The overwhelming bulk of sports betting taking location through UK operators is legal and fair," he says.
"But for some there is the temptation to ... corruptly interfere with the outcome of a sporting event.
"Such cheating has the potential to weaken the stability of a sport, and it also harms the industrial interests of sports bodies and sports betting."
The commission has actually developed an in-house Sports Betting Intelligence Unit to get and distribute details to sporting authorities, betting firms and policing authorities.
"Since 2007 we have actually experienced a considerable insight into world of corrupt sports wagering," he states.
"We will alert sports of our issues, to help avoid or cut [illegal] activity"
In May 2010, the commission also introduced a confidential telephone hotline for those with information or suspicions.
'Vulnerabilities'
But in a two-and-a-half year duration there has been simply one criminal prosecution, a 24-year-old guy who was warned for unfaithful in relation to greyhound racing.
However, Mr Tofiluk states there are still eight continuous investigations, which much beneficial info has also been passed to sports authorities.
He said that where an examination by a sport governing body was quicker, and more cost efficient, then the commission would think about terminating a criminal investigation "in favour of letting sports governing bodies take the lead".
Meanwhile, he says a number of those seeking to cheat the sports betting market were educated about sports and sporting people, and about betting operations and the motion of cash.
"They look for the vulnerabilities of these to assist in their business."
